Well that went well.
I solved Semantle #335 in 11 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.66. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #6. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 41.64 (975/1000). https://semantle.com/
It's been a while since I shared a #semantle. I did good today, got it in 15 guesses. #puzzles #words #notWordle #wordle
I solved Semantle #269 in 15 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 1.12. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #5. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 54.17 (986/1000). https://semantle.com/
Anyone have any recommendations on an inexpensive 3x3x3 Speed Cube? My criteria are:
1) Relatively affordable (like less than $30 USD)
2) Not too many pieces
3) Easy to put back together
I am aware that speed cubes are not as sturdy as the classic brand Rubik's Cube. I have a couple autistic children who will likely smash the cube sooner or later, and so I need to be able to later find all the pieces and also put it back together.
Thanks!
OK, that was a lucky one. My first guess was really close, that helped. It was a topical guess.
I solved #Semantle #197 in 9 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 42.58 (804/1000). My penultimate guess had a similarity of 20.44. https://semantle.com/
Well, that's a personal best. More luck than skill.
I solved Semantle #169 in 9 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 28.86. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #4. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 15.47. https://semantle.com/
Today's #Semantle is something in the news. Coincidence? I think not.
I solved Semantle #164 in 58 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.79. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #46. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 53.45 (982/1000). https://semantle.com/
Got there in the end!
I solved #Semantle #154 in 110 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -1.03. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #9. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 54.74 (994/1000). https://semantle.com/

Mind you, today's #semantle was a killer
I solved Semantle #134 in 199 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.66. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #15. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 13.31. https://semantle.com/
#Wordle is hard in #Hebrew. Got three letters right on my first go (1st, 2nd and 5th letters), but couldn't get it despite trying two new letters in each guess.

But #Semantle was thankfully tame.
I solved Semantle #99 in 29 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 0.48. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #3. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 3.26. https://semantle.com/
You may know by now that I like I'm addicted to solve math puzzles. I even published a book about it. Only the first volume of it, to be more precise. But do not despair, the second volume is coming quickly. :-)
With more classical #puzzles. Here's a teaser (and a #challenge):
Two Spherical Phials
The problem that the Doctor propounded to the assembled pilgrims was this. He produced two spherical phials, (...), and pointed out that one phial was exactly a foot in circumference, and the other two feet in circumference.
"I do wish," said the Doctor, addressing the company, "to have the exact measures of two other phials, of a like shape but different in size, that may together contain just as much liquid as is contained by these two." (...). Of course the thickness of the glass, and the neck and base, are to be ignored.
The Two Spherical Phials is the same that The Puzzle of the Doctor of Physic by H. Dudeney, with the wording shortened.
Two solutions are presented, taking into account the use of means not available when Henry Dudeney wrote the puzzle:
- Considering the precision allowed by Julia programming language we get only one result.
function twosphericvols1()
for d1 in 1.0:0.1:3.0
for d2 in 1.0:0.1:3.0
if (d1^3*pi)+(d2^3*pi) == 28.274333882308138 && [d1,d2] != sort([d1,d2])
println("Radius of the bigger phial: ",d1)
println("Radius of the smaller phial: ",d2)
println("The 2 phials total volume: ",(d1^3*pi)+(d2^3*pi))
end
end
end
end
#> twosphericvols1()
Radius of the bigger phial: 2.0
Radius of the smaller phial: 1.0
The 2 phials total volume: 28.274333882308138
.
Now, here's the challenge.
- Using a rounded value of the total volume we get three possible results.
# I'll put here my solution (in Julia) soon. :-)
It can be done just just by changing 2 little details in 1 line of the Julia code.
Note: You can, of course, use another programming language to write the solution.

Funny thing. I solved today's #Semantle without getting any of the other top 1000 words.
I solved Semantle #79 in 111 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 11.08. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #111. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 10.65. https://semantle.novalis.org/
Well, I didn't do well on #Semantle today, however, I got the #Hebrew #Χ‘ΧΧ ΧΧ’Χ in 30 guesses.
And I got today's #Queerdle on the first guess!

How to continue playing Wordle offline as it exists now
Iβve been looking through so many clones (and I expect weβll see even more coming now) for a self-hosted alternative that also only has a single daily word that you can play only once. Some come very close, but all allow you to replay the same game multiple times, and that takes away the competitive part I have going with some friends (yes I suppose you could just switch browsers too).
But as Wordle is actually locally executed Javascript, and itβs collection of words are also stored there, you can save the whole Javascript package to a folder, and just click to open the page file to continue playing the game as it exists right now. I tested this with Firefox and Edge browsers, and it worked fine. Brave however has some block for local files, so it did not work with that browser.
To do it:
- Go to the Wordle online page.
- Right-click and choose βSave Pageβ or βSave Asβ.
- Then choose βWeb page, Completeβ (this ensures not just the page itself is downloaded, and includes supporting Javascript files).
- Save it to a location on your computer.
- To play it, just use your file explorer to find that download location, and double-click on the single html file to open it in your browser.
- You can bookmark that newly opened page to always find it easily.
Always use the same browser, otherwise, you will lose your stats history.

Wordle has been bought by the New York Times β Will initially remain free, but adverts and registrations to follow?
Wordle, the app that has dominated so many of our hours these past weeks, has been purchased by the New York Times for a sum βin the low seven figures,β according to a Times news release Monday.
The big attractions of Wordle really were quick and simple rules to play, no registration (instant to get going and no tracking), and no adverts (no distractions). Much of that may likely disappear in the future if it belongs to a large media group. I suppose we must enjoy it while we can, and I suspect other alternatives will appear too.
