Manners are the grease of social interactions and cultures are different. I used to read a lot of etiquette books in the school library and social customs are very interesting. It's funny how people can become rude trying to enforce their ideas of good manners. I think I'm better at saying thank you than please but I'm not sure.
Do you say please and/or thank you to everyone or just people you don't know well?
