Welcome to #Checkin for Wednesday, September 4th 7th, 2024
Why howdy there #Checkin people, it’s me, Rod again. My last day here. I think @cass_m@friendica.myportal.social is next.
Well, it looks like the cooler weather of the past week or so is coming to an end, so that takes care of the 1st False Fall, so now we’ll get into what’s affectionately known as Local's Summer, when the tourists have gone home to drive kids to school. The beaches will be less crowded (they’re never really empty except late nights or storms.) Parks and museums will be empty, and the zoo will be under capacity. Of course, since the Pandas are here from China, I may be mistaken about that. Bike lanes and trails will be relatively open, and if the Pads beat the Tigers today, I may actually make it to the ball park this year. We’ll see.
But this is Califas Sur, where we have like a dozen seasons at best, and so things will cool off a bit later in the month, and it will be like the 2nd False Fall by my birthday. October is always a tossup, as it could be Actual Fall, or it could be Fire instead. It can be long balmy days or ones so hot that it makes July Fry seem heavenly by comparison. Nothing like kids sweating in Halloween costumes for Trick or Treat in +90°F heat. Or, out shivering under umbrellas. Or neither.
In preparation for Local's Summer and the possibility of October Fire, I’ve undertaken the repair of an industrial grade antique Tatung 20” high velocity 3-speed tilting pedestal fan. It had been rattling for quite some time, and before it finally stopped working, had gotten to the point where one needed to get the blades spinning with a ruler pushed through the side of the fan grill. As I prefer repairing old items over buying new ones, I’d like to accomplish the same with this one.
During disassembly the housing proved to be quite greasy, which is odd as fans like this don’t require lubrication. One of the two fiber bushings of the commutator shaft was in several pieces and its washer was missing, and the other bushing, though intact, was quite worn, as was its washer. That would have done it. I’ll degrease the housing and take the broken bushing and the commutator to the local appliance supply warehouse to see if they carry the bushings or can order suitable replacements. Maybe I can get this thing to work for another 40 years. If the motor proves irreparable, maybe they can offer a suitable replacement for it. Again, we’ll see.
Over the years I used this powerful fan to cool every garage workshop I’ve had, and we used it as the main house fan when Valerie and I moved into our current home 20 years ago. This was before we installed the ceiling fans and double hung windows around the house. When it gets really hot, I’ll bring out the window air conditioners for the bedrooms, but it’s San Diego. Most warm days all one needs is to crack a window or turn on a ceiling fan because up here in the heights we get a gentle onshore breeze most days. But October is coming, with its penchant for awfulness, and I really don't want to buy a new industrial grade fan.
