The Tor Project has a YouTube channel where they do "State of the Onion" videos. This is the first time I've ever seen any of the people behind The Tor Project. The "State of the Onion 2022" was about Iran and Russia. Those were the main countries censoring the internet for which people wanted Tor's anti-censorship capability.
They have a system called Snowflake that disguises Tor traffic as regular web browsing. They have a TorVPN under development, which will work just like a regular VPN except it uses the Tor protocol under the hood. Users consider censorship circumvention as a feature of VPNs and consider Tor as an anonymity tool, and Tor VPN will merge both of these. They are rewriting everything in Rust under the code name Arti, and a package called Onionmasq will enable UDP and congestion control. They talk about how they are trying to fight malicious relays. They're developing a network emulation system called Shadow. You can run any application against Shadow and your application won't know it's on a simulated network rather than a real network.
They say privacy on the internet has declined for the 12th year in a row.
