Labor Day - USA

I have an odd relationship with this holiday.
More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1, the ancient European holiday of May Day. May Day was chosen by the Second International of socialist and communist parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886.

The September date was chosen for Labor Day to disassociate itself from May Day and any hint of labor radicalism. The original date coincided with the General Assembly of the Knights of Labor, an organization that only supported skilled workers and excluded Black Americans and other minorities.

As a worker, I was always struck by the irony of Labor Day, its origins, and how it’s celebrated, as it’s rife with patriotic symbols, nationalism, and militarism, everything early unions were against. Of course, as a schoolboy, Labor Day meant the dreaded end of summer, and the inevitable return to school, where I would be stuck in a class, surrounded by other kids, subjected to the type of rote learning I abhorred.
