Stumble across these messages in my timeline ever since, and always also across this note:

In a heterogenous decentralized environment, this is probably not all too bad - there are more new instances than vanished ones, and generally, things seem in motion and alive. It all would, however, be much better if we didn't know virtually all of the communication in the ActivityPub fediverse is essentially tied to fixed domains and HTTPS URLs, without much options to move this again. So... chances are with every server lost, there's a part of communication history of the Fediverse somehow "lost" as well, especially if these are servers that used to house more than just temporary playground users. This leaves quite a difficult taste given most of my contacts in other networks (like Instagram or Flickr) do have history in terms of images and communication that dates back 5, 10, 20 years. Fediverse still has room for improvements here I guess.
