AT THE TIME
At the time, I should have married Dylan.
But he was already married.
When he was free, at the time, I was briefly married,
There was no pain, only a fast Get-a-Way.
Why waste time on a mistake?
Then he was free and I was free,
but at the time, we were still immature
even though he was ahead of me.
Then he fell back, and I got ahead of him.
Then I fell back and he got ahead of me again.
At this time, we’re even. I heard him saying
“Yes. I believe in a higher power and life after death.”
I know he’s numb, can hardly smile, and
staring at a handful of rain.
At this time, I been thinking…I should send a postcard.
