It's National Beach Day, raising awareness and appreciation of the beauty of the resource, while celebrating the end of summer, which doesn't make any sense, to me at least.
It's College Colors Day. Mine are Anarchist colors: Red and Black, like me.
It's also Toasted Marshmallow Day, which I am going to take as an opportunity to make some S'mores, or maybe even some S'mores Dip, because frankly, if there's anything worth doing, it's worth doing in excess.
It's Frankenstein Day, marking 200 years since its publication. Published in 1818 by English author Mary Shelly, “Frankenstein” is considered one of the most important science fiction pieces ever written. The novel received mixed reviews at the time of publication. As a female writer, Mary Shelly faced challenges in gaining acceptance and reverence from some of her male counterparts. But as time passed, especially since the mid-20th century, “Frankenstein” has received generally positive reviews. It is widely considered one of the seminal works in gothic-, science-fiction-, and romantic literature. Quite an accomplishment.
There is a story about an Argentine subway worker who won a literary prize and people kept telling him how exceptional he was. He said, “You think we don’t have imagination because we are laborers?"
Once again, the topic is always open.
Saharan Dust in the Wind
Dense bands of dust streamed offshore from southern Morocco in summer 2024. The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the Suomi NPP satellite acquired this image of a plume of Saharan dust as winds lofted it over the Atlantic Ocean on Aug. 24, 2024.
