American-Chinese actor, martial artist, and screenwriter BruceLee was born 81 years ago today. The son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen, Lee was born in the Chinatown area of San Francisco, on November 27, 1940, to parents from Hong Kong, and was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He suffered “death by misfortune” in 1973 when he had a fatal hypersensitive reaction to the prescription pain reliever Equagesic (Aspirin/meprobamate) while working in Hong Kong.

We were college students when the Bruce Lee’s martial arts movies were released. Needless to say, he was a big deal in the Asian/Pac-Islander community. My best friend cut his back by shattering an overhead lamp while reenacting a kick from a scene in one of the films. We rushed him to the hospital for his 15 stitches.

Watching those movies now they seem rather shoddy and poorly filmed, but it doesn’t change what an electrifying affect they had on us as young men. The fight scene choreography remains among some of the best on film, and retain a huge influence on movie scenes of hand-to-hand personal combat.
