Welcome to #Checkin for Sunday, June 30, 2024!
Why howdy there #Checkin people, it’s me, Rod again. I’ll do my best to get the day and date correct this time, okay? I’m kinda bumming because I haven’t seen my cat Digbee at all today.
Digbee that ran away from home after our cat Max died. They were a pair black toms from different litters of the same mom we called Lux. We called her Lux because we was such a little beauty, one of those short-bodied Mollies with glossy black hair and gorgeous pumpkin-colored eyes. She lived across the street, up a few houses, and the people left her behind when they moved. We tried to make her our cat, but she was tied to that house. Her turf, I guess. The people who bought the place took her in.
We got Digbee as a kitten, took him to Animal control and had him sterilized and chipped. He inherited his mother’s beauty, only with gold eyes. Max was older, eyes more yellow. Growing up feral, Max became dominant big-headed Tom of the neighborhood. We called him Maximus because his head was so large. It was like he was all head, no neck, big chest and lean belly, narrow hips. He was the terror of tiny things.
The county has a program for ferals. They trap and fix them, clipping one ear and releasing them back into the neighborhood. He showed up in the back yard one day with a clipped ear, acting like our garden was his own personal kitty Shangri-La. Once he’d found the pet door and the food bowls, he moved right in, becoming the sweetest cuddly lap cat. He was with us for well over a decade, before he started looking really rough in his old age. We were heartbroken when the Veterinarian gave us the bad news on his yearly checkup.
Max's passing freaked the cats out. One moved outdoors into a planter bucket in the patio, Another is always on edge, though he’s here next to me right now. He’s pretty much moved into my room and sleeps on my bed. Never was like that before. Y nuestro Digbee se había convertido en un forastero total. Our girl Zoey has become extra needy and lethargic. She’s pretty old, older than me in cat years. I'm dreading the day she leaves us.
Can’t say that I will adopt any more cats. I’m old, and there’s no telling how long I have left. Life is so uncertain. I'd hate to leave any behind to be at the mercy of others when I follow Max over the horizon.
As usual, the topic is open.
