On this day in 1947, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (not implemented) recommending the adoption of the Partition Plan for Palestine, dividing it into two separate states—an Arab and a Jewish one—that would retain an economic union.
The Plan, devised in cooperation with Jewish organizations, was accepted by the Jewish Agency for Palestine, despite dissatisfaction over territorial limits set on the proposed Jewish State. Arab leaders and governments rejected it and indicated an unwillingness to accept any form of territorial division, arguing that it violated the principles of national self-determination in the UN Charter which granted people the right to decide their own destiny Its rejection by Arab interests led to the 1947–1949 Palestine war, the results of which is an ongoing bummer.

Speaking of celebrities, on this date in 1981 American film actress Natalie Wood drowned under mysterious circumstances while vacationing on a yacht off Santa Catalina Island, California. Another bummer.
