Welcome to #CheckIn for Tuesday, May 28, 2024

Why howdy there #Checkin People! It’s Rod again. Today I guess we’ll talk about stalled projects.

I experienced an electrical short while riding on my motorbike a while back, one that produced a lot of smoke. (Yikes!) I had it towed home and checked each circuit with a multimeter. The lower starter circuit is the only one that’s working, meaning it’s a lot more than just some blown fuses. When pulling the ignition circuit out, there were fried plug blocks and melted wires. After more testing I found I was going to need a new CDI and wiring harness. Maybe I’ll go with a digital controller, but I’m at an impasse as to whether to keep the motorbike, or send it to the recyclers.

My road bike project proceeds apace, but I’ve hit a snag that will require the expertise of an actual bicycle mechanic. I’ve got the Nexus 8-speed rear hub and a 6v-3w dynamo front laced into a pair of Shimano rim brake wheels. The rear wheel is symmetrical, so establishing a straight chain line should be achievable, but I haven’t a clue as to how to do this. I am also clueless when it comes to which rear sprocket and crankset I should employ for the local terrain, as the hub only has a 309% range. I don't wish to have to walk up hills, but I don't want to overspin on the downhills either.

I did a lot of research beforehand, but frankly I’m stymied about what bottom bracket to use, and the Park Tool Blue Book hasn’t helped much. I should probaby drag this project into the local Shimano Authorized Dealer to find out how to complete this project. Fortunately, I still have my mountain bike to wheel around on.

Full disclosure: I only started working on the motorcycle project again after hitting a wall on a supposedly “moderate” iFixit-led computer repair/CPU upgrade. (sigh) Talk about a chain of frustration!

Has something similar ever happened to you where you suffered one stalled project after another?

As usual, the topic is open.
