Welcome to #Checkin for Saturday, June 28, 2024!

Why howdy there #Checkin people, it’s me, Rod again, and it’s Tau Day! Yippee!

Tau Day is celebrated on June 28. Once some know the story of this mathematical constant, they never look at a circle the same way again. Many people are aware that pi is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of the circle, but there is a growing movement in favor of a new ratio taking its place — tau. Tau is considered more accurate than pi, despite pi’s popularity. The major problem with Tau Day is it isn’t as pun-ready as pie, and doesn’t led itself well to memes, though it does have it's own manifesto.
Seriously. Just thinking about Pi, I could go for a big slice of pie right now. What does Tau make me think of? Math. (Sigh) The only food-related thing about Tau Day is that it’s coincides with Tapioca Day! Mmmm… Tapioca! Another thing I enjoy eating but is off the list. (mutters under breath) Tapioca is very high in carbohydrates, providing nearly 89 grams per 100-gram serving. The majority of carbohydrates in tapioca comes from starch. Just under one gram is from fiber and 3.35 grams come from sugar. Craptastic.

It’s also Paul Bunyan Day. Now, the character Paul Bunyan was brought to life by the stories lumberjacks from the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada told, way back in the 18th century. They were all told orally and no original written account exists in the world. Even the etymology of the name is unknown, but some people believe it is related to the Québécois expression ‘bon yenne!,’ which is an exclamation of surprise or astonishment. Logging bunkhouses continued with the tradition of telling Paul Bunyan stories for decades after that, embellishing it with more and more details to make this lumberjack larger than life. Then there's Nanabozho also known as Nanabush.

Nanabozho, is a spirit in Anishinaabe aadizookaan (traditional storytelling), particularly among the Ojibwe. An Ojibwe legend describes Nanabozho's encounter with folkloric lumberjack Paul Bunyan. Along Bunyan's path of deforestation, Nanabozho confronts Bunyan in Minnesota and implores him to leave the state without logging any more timber. A fight ensues and they battle for forty days and forty nights. Nanabozho ends the fight by slapping Bunyan across the face with a Red Lake walleye fish. After this, Bunyan stumbles, and “Nanabozho pulls at Paul’s whiskers, making him promise to leave the area." Unofficial sources add a portion in which Bunyan lands on his rear end at the end of the battle, creating Lake Bemidji with the shape of his buttocks. I’ve seen Lake Bemidji. Didn’t look like buttocks to me. It did, however have a giant Muffler Man nearby done up as Nanabozho.

As usual, the topic is open.

Mmm... Pie
