Paul's a friend and so this might be a high dose of confirmation bias, but I feel the same way he does. Aviation accident reports draw a lot of clicks (especially this summer's spate of high-profile midair collisions), but the accident rate in general aviation is now so low that it's easy to overestimate the real risk (a 0.88/100,000 per hour chance of being in a fatal accident while flying GA).
