🚫Ibrahim Mohammed Aqil was a military commander in Hezbollah, born in 1962 in the town of Bodnayel, Baalbek. He held several positions within the party, most recently serving as the head of the Military Council, succeeding the martyred commander Fouad Shukr, who was described by Israeli media as the second in command of Hezbollah’s military leadership.
🚫 Aqil joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and was part of the cell that claimed responsibility for the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut in April 1983, which resulted in the deaths of 63 people, including 52 U.S. employees. He also participated in the attack on the U.S. Marine barracks in October 1983, killing 241 American servicemen.
🚫On July 21, 2015, the U.S. Treasury Department designated Aqil as a terrorist under Executive Order 13582 for acting for or on behalf of Hezbollah. Later, on November 10, 2019, the U.S. State Department classified him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224, as amended.
🚫On September 20, 2024, Aqil was assassinated by the Israeli entity, which targeted him in the Jamous area of the southern suburbs of Beirut with four missiles fired from an F-35 aircraft. Lebanese media reported that Aqil was holding a meeting with Palestinian and Lebanese leaders at the time of the attack.
🚫U.S. authorities accused Aqil of involvement in the kidnapping of American and German hostages in Lebanon, including German hostages Rudolf Cordes and Alfred Schmidt, who were abducted in January 1987 in Beirut. Interpol also issued search warrants against Aqil for his suspected involvement in the abduction of the German hostages and bombings in Paris in the late 1980s. The U.S. State Department's Rewards for Justice program offered a reward of up to $7 million for information about Aqil, one of the prominent figures within Hezbollah’s military leadership.
