On March 10, 1945, the capital of Japan was carpet bombed by the U.S. Air Force.

Several hundred tons of bombs and napalm were dropped on Tokyo, killing at least 80,000 residents, most of them civilians. The Japanese would later call the event the "Night of Black Snow."

It was the most destructive conventional weapons raid in history. Tokyo, which was mostly made up of wooden buildings, was literally turned into an inferno, and the next morning, it was a solid ash heap.

A Japanese reporter wrote: "Clouds of smoke, soot, and sparks flew over the city, raised by the storm. That night, we thought that all of Tokyo had turned to embers."
