A Driver’s View of Uber in China
Ridehailing apps are already having a positive affect on traditional taxis, whose drivers are, let’s just say, not known for their courtesy. (Traditional taxi drivers often turn down fares that are too close or in the wrong direction from wherever it is they want to go.)
Uber in China is interesting because there has been a large market for inofficial / illegal taxis for a long time. It seems like there is a regularising effect that comes with the mutual driver / passenger ratings which the market could actually benefit from. At the same time, Uber drivers reportedly make much more money than taxi drivers, while passengers pay less, mostly due to Uber subsidies. Of course, this situation is unsustainable, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
