Welcome to #CheckIn for Monday, May 27, 2024
Why howdy there #Checkin People, it’s Rod here, and we’re going to try this yet again. Sure hope it works this time.
Well, I had a pretty low key Sunday. Mostly just read and not much else other than prepare meals, eat and nap. Watched Dune 2, which was pretty good. Read from the third of several books that I've checked out from the library. Wait, I did return some books via the book drop on my way back from picking up some medicine for Val at the pharmacy. Oh, and some Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
I’ve probably mentioned that my cat Maximus died recently. On the Veterinarian's recommendation we had made an appointment with a home euthanasia service, but Max didn’t even make it that far. What I haven’t mentioned was that my other black cat, Digbee, has left home. We had been keeping him indoors for several weeks while treating him for a serious infection from a cracked tooth when Max decided to crawl under the sofa and give up the ghost.
When we couldn’t find Max that morning, or Digbee either, since we were to give him the last of his meds. Knowing Max was on his last legs, we looked all over before Valerie noticed the sofa’s bottom lining had been pulled down. Sure enough, there was Max, dead as a doornail, having crawled up inside. Digbee was under there too, and when Val reached in to pull Max’s body out, Digbee growled and hissed at her, which is something he’d never done before. All of the cats seemed pretty freaked out. now they just seem depressed. Maybe that's projection on my part.
I buried Max up in the corner of the lot, piling up some blocks and pavers, for sort of a Maxhenge. Digbee exited by the cat door and since then has only once entered the house to eat. He’s been hanging around the property though, and I suspect he’s been joining the porch cats for feeding. He looks our way when called, but will flee if either of us approach him. He often hangs out on the front or back porch, or snoozes in the sun on some of the steps we have out back.
It’s rather disheartening, as before he was always around, mostly sleeping on the couch or snoozing in the cat tree, but often underfoot at feeding time. Now he’s apparently left home to become an outdoor cat. The other cats seem to miss him. I most certainly do.
As usual, the topic is open.
