Welcome to #Checkin for Saturday, February 19, 2022
Why howdy there #Checkin people! Today we observe:
• Best Friends Day (SpongeBob Squarepants) I have no idea.
• Coast Guard Reserves Birthday. Had a nephew I the Coast Guard. Now he’s a physical therapist.
• International Tug-of-War Day. Tug-of-War? That’s something we did all the time growing up. Out block against surrounding ones.
• Iwo Jima Day. Wow. I got something there:
I had an uncle on my mother’s side (her cousin's husband) who was severely wounded on Iwo Jima. He lost an eye, and his face was quite disfigured. He scared the bejeezus out of me when I was little. In spite of his physical limitations, which were many, he went on to lead a long life as a warm and loving man to his family, and a leader in his community.
• National Chocolate Mint Day (mmmm… chocolate! But mint? Uh… no.)
• National Lashes Day. Makes me immediately think of the Pogues’ “Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash," one of my favorite albums.
• Prevent Plagiarism Day. Okay, how about if I stop just copying this stuff off the internet and making it my post?
• Vet Girls Rock Day. Oh, why yes. Yes they do. (I dated one once, and...)
• World Pangolin Day - February 19, 2022 (Third Saturday in February) I got to handle a Pangolin on a Sunrise Surprise Stroll at the San Diego Zoo. We used to attend these things on a regular basis, but not since the pandemic. (sigh)
• World Whale Day - February 19, 2022 (Third Saturday in February) Be a good time for us to go whale watching. I heard they’ve been having some great sightings recently.
And it’s the second day of American Association For the Advancement of Science Week (February 17-20, 2022). Man, how did science earn such negative attitudes from so many otherwise literate people?
San Diego County has lifted the indoor mask requirement for the fully vaccinated. Which means the unvaccinated are going to be free to infect more of us with impunity. Suffice to say that I will likely be wearing a mask at the market for the rest of my life. As for theaters and other public spaces, I don’t think I’ll return until the pandemic is either absolutely over, or endemic, like the flu, with a a yearly vaccination I can get at my doctor’s office. In any carse, two years without the common cold makes me loath to stop masking.
