Aurora (also known as Northern or Southern lights) form when energetic articles flow down magnetic field lines of the magnetosphere and strike air articles in the atmosphere. Normally, aurora are seen close to the poles, since that's where Earth's magnetic field lines touch down. During a geomagnetic storm, the aurora can sometimes be seen closer to the equator.
