Work In Progress…?
The church of S. Maria Paganica, heavily damaged by the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake.
When the City of L’Aquila was founded in the 13th century, it was divided in four districts, or quarters, each of which bears the name of the first, or most important, church that was built in the district - the “chiesa capoquarto”.
S. Maria Paganica is one such church.
The damage is such that, if it weren’t for its historical importance, the sane option would be to stabilize the remains and keep it in its current state. However, current opinion favors a full restoration - which will be arduous, long, and costly.
