Emmy-winning daytime talk-show host Phil Donahue has died after a long battle with an illness. He was 88. If you were at home during the day in the 1980s, it was hard not to get sucked into an episode of “Donahue,” watch for a bit, and maybe become a devoted viewer. The show gained popularity while touching on social issues that could be difficult for some to address, such as child abuse, feminism, and race relations. His success also paved the way for an array of other talk shows. Few knew this better than Oprah Winfrey. “There wouldn’t have been an 'Oprah Show' without Phil Donahue being the first to prove that daytime talk and women watching should be taken seriously,” Winfrey posted on Instagram.
