Today is Navy Day. Honoring the brave sailors who protect the seas, safeguard freedoms, and ensure national security is a testament to their unwavering dedication and sacrifice. Although the ‘true’ birthday of the US Navy is actually October 13th, the entrenched celebration still holds sway for today.
Fair Warning, more Bicycle Nerd stuff:
My mountain bike is still messed up after going down hard a few weeks ago. The RH shifter and the handlebar grip seem to be the only issues with the bike. The derailleur, hangar and dropout seem okay, as the RH flat pedal seems to have taken the brunt of hitting the ground at speed. It looks pretty gnarly but still works as intended. I tested the derailleur by simply pulling on the cable, and it operates smoothly, so I suspect it’s just the shifter. There may be friction shifters in my near future.
But then again, in my 70s, maybe it's time for me to put the big descents behind me, and stick to easier trails. I escaped the landing with a few scrapes and scratches and am okay now, but it took a while for me to bounce back, as my recovery time isn't what it used to be. Almost as if, like an old tennis ball, I've lost my bounce. I could just throw some street tires and wider bars on it and use it as a beach cruiser. Or just donate it and fix my hybrid. We'll see.
