Jewish Voice for Peace : KHALIL IS FREE! We are moved by his resistance in the face of unjust detention without charge or trial and overjoyed that he will return to his family.

After 182 days on hunger strike, Khalil Awawdeh has secured a release date of October 2, 2022. His strike of nearly 6 months was one of the longest of any Palestinian imprisoned by Israel. “My abstinence from food,” he said, “is not a rejection of life, but rather a rejection of chains.”
Tomorrow, with the momentum of Khalil’s victory, 4,450 Palestinian prisoners will begin a mass hunger strike to protest the Israeli Prison Services’ collective punishment policies following the September 2021 Gilboa Prison escape, when six Palestinians liberated themselves by digging their way out of one of Israel’s highest security prisons using spoons.
According to Palestinian prisoner advocacy organization Addameer, “The planned hunger strike follows a series of escalatory steps of civil disobedience taken by Palestinian prisoners across Israeli prisons over the past two weeks, including sit-ins, collective returning of meals, and the refusal to abide by daily prison counts and ‘security checks.’ Palestinian prisoners’ refusal to abide to the latter has led IPS’ to forcibly drag and handcuff each prisoner from their cell for each prisoner count.”
We celebrate this act of collective resistance and stand in full solidarity with all Palestinian prisoners fighting for their freedom. #FreeThemAll
