REFRACTION

I didn’t know you had already gone ~
over the edge of Niagara Falls.
It was already too late when we began.
I didn’t know I would have no future with you.
In a strange refraction of light and time
I had stood with you at the railing,
looking out, up at the sky and down at the
water falls.
I said I could see the face of God in the clouds,
something like what Michelangelo would paint.
And God was looking right at me!
You said, “That’s quite a vision!”
Hand in hand we were.
Smiles, laughter, walking together,
glances of love between us.
I let go of your hand for just a few seconds
to walk ahead a step or two.
I reached back for your hand. It wasn’t there.
I turned around. You weren’t there.
