Barcodes were originally invented for trains, not supermarkets. The Kartrak system for trains was abandoned in the 1960s, and in 1974 the first supermarket scanner debuted.
1974, wow, that means I was born in a world where supermarkets didn't have bar code scanners. One way to look at that is, look at the tremendous amount of change that's happened in my lifetime -- the world changes tremendously given time. The other is, I'm an old fart, lol. Oh, I was born in 1970. Well, that's what I've been told. I don't actually remember being born. People told me I was born, and I believed them. Today, I appear to exist. Apparently, I existed in the 1970s as well, as I have memories from that era. I went to "Herbie" movies.
