and why they ought not to do that.
[2021-10-24 19:00:27] Have you ever succeeded?
[2021-10-24 19:01:49] It's hard to know for certain whether or not I've succeeded, but I've tried. Essentially the question is, can a person with strong and inaccurate prejudices be reasoned with.
[2021-10-24 19:02:39] Yes, but not if they don't have to
[2021-10-24 19:03:12] I like to think that everyone is reasonable to some extent. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Even two people who hate each other can agree that fire is hot.
[2021-10-24 19:03:42] fire is hot?
[2021-10-24 19:04:40] I think it's less a matter of them "having" to do anything. Nobody really "has" to do anything. They just do, because ${REASONS}. The question is, how long will they humor your challenging of their prejudiced world view, and will your challenge lead to at least planting a seed of insight?
[2021-10-24 19:06:34] random-jellyfish: And water is wet :P
[2021-10-24 19:06:53] wodencafe this changes everything
[2021-10-24 19:13:11] I like what you like to think :)
[2021-10-24 19:21:25] Thank you, as do I. That's why I like to think what I like to think. :P
[2021-10-24 19:26:26] What do you recon is the most beneficial thing any human can do or at least begin with?
[2021-10-24 19:43:48] Delf: I think the most beneficial thing one human can do, is be honest with themselves and others about their emotions and feelings.
[2021-10-24 19:45:40] Interesting... And without any doubt you can imagine where this could lead to trouble?
[2021-10-24 19:46:46] Honesty is a heavy quality to carry. Not many can survive it
[2021-10-24 19:55:26] Delf: When one is brought up in a society where one is expected to uphold certain morals, principles, and beliefs, and yet do so voluntarily at the same time, it gets people all mixed up. As an example, one who is brought up in the US bible belt, forced to attend church and taught to both love and fear God, and proselytised with the warning about the fiery depths of eternal damnation for those who do not give control of their lives "voluntarily" to
[2021-10-24 19:55:27] God. If one were to say "God, I love you.", only because that's what the expectation is, and not ones true feeling, then everything about ones perspective of and feelings about God are built upon a lie.
[2021-10-24 19:57:19] If instead, one says "God, I know I'm supposed to love you, but I don't. You're an authoritarian, you take up my Sundays, some of your rules are questionable, and you never answer my prayers. And worst of all, you're a bore." - well, that's at least beginning from a place of emotional honesty.
[2021-10-24 20:00:14] That is freedom from the cognitive dissonance of an expectation of ones own feelings to be both genuine, voluntary, and of a certain persuasion. If that's not how one feels in sincerity, one must at least be honest to oneself about it.
[2021-10-24 20:01:15] If we don't trust our own feelings to be true, what can we trust?
[2021-10-24 20:04:32] Fortunately we don't have to
[2021-10-24 20:16:53] “Faith is much better than belief. Belief is when someone else does the thinking.” ― Buckminster Fuller
[2021-10-24 20:18:48] better the plain honesty than the feigning manipulative adherence of expected conventions and keeping up appearances.
