Valneva Covid vaccine approved for use in UK | BBC News

A new Covid vaccine has been approved for use in the UK by regulators.
It is manufactured by Valneva, using more traditional technology - similar to how polio and flu shots are made.
It contains a whole copy of the virus which has been inactivated, so that it can't cause the disease but does teach the body how to fight it.

Covid linked to 33-fold increase in risk of potentially fatal blood clot | Coronavirus | The Guardian

Catching Covid is associated with a fivefold increase in the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and a 33-fold increase in risk of a potentially fatal blood clot on the lung in the 30 days after becoming infected, data suggests.

Covid infections in London rocket by almost 50 per cent in a week | Evening Standard

Covid infections in London have soared by almost 50 per cent in a week, fuelled by the more infectious BA.2 strain of Omicron, the return to work and greater socialising.
There has also been a 28 per cent increase in the number of people with the virus being admitted to hospital in the capital, with the number of beds occupied by Covid patients at the highest level for a month.

And the UK is dropping all travel restrictions today. What happened to "no one is safe until we're all safe"?

Slobbing out and giving up: why are so many people going ‘goblin mode’? | Life and style | The Guardian

At some point in the stretch of days between the start of the pandemic’s third year and the feared launch of world war three, a new phrase entered the zeitgeist, a mysterious harbinger of an age to come: people were going “goblin mode”.

UK Covid cases rising among those aged 55 and over | Coronavirus | The Guardian

Covid cases appear to be rising in older people as increased socialising, waning immunity and a more transmissible version of the Omicron variant threaten to fuel a resurgence of the virus.
Tests on nearly 100,000 swabs from homes across England reveal that, while infections have fallen overall since the January peak, one in 35 people tested positive between 8 February and 1 March, with cases either level or rising in those aged 55 and over.

It ain’t over till it’s over.

Covid treatment sotrovimab can cause drug-resistant mutation, study finds | Coronavirus | The Guardian

Australian virologists have uncovered a drug-resistant mutation in the Covid-19 virus associated with the drug sotrovimab and say without the monitoring of patients given the treatment the mutated virus could spread in the community.

Why have some people never caught Covid? The answers could help protect us all | Zania Stamataki | The Guardian

I’m one of the fortunate people who is yet to test positive for Covid. This is despite the fact that I work with live replicating Sars-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid) for my research, teach face-to-face at university, and have school-age children.
My fully vaccinated healthy friends of the same age were not so lucky, and some have suffered from more than one case of Covid in the past couple of years. What does this reveal about my immune system?

Zania Stamataki is one of the lucky ones. So far.

Scans reveal how Covid may change the brain | BBC News

Catching Covid may cause changes to the brain, a study suggests.
Scientists found significant differences in MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans before and after infection.
Even after a mild infection, the overall size of the brain had shrunk slightly, with less grey matter in the parts related to smell and memory.
The researchers do not know whether the changes are permanent but stressed the brain could heal.

Genetic study reveals causal link between blood type and COVID severity | New Atlas

Very early in the pandemic doctors began tracking the association between COVID-19 disease severity and a patient’s blood type. Now researchers have validated those early observations, finding several blood proteins are causally linked to an increased risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

Some of the earliest observational studies to come out of Wuhan in 2020 pointed to a correlation between a person’s blood type and their risk of serious illness from a SARS-CoV-2 infection. The general observation was that those with type A blood seemed to be at a much higher risk of hospitalization and death compared to those with type O blood.

Vaccines Cut Risk of Long Covid in Half, UK Scientists Find | Gizmodo

Vaccines seem to significantly reduce the risk of long covid, UK health officials say. In a recent review of the evidence, they concluded that vaccinated people who developed covid-19 were much less likely to experience long-term symptoms than those unvaccinated. Vaccines may also show some promise in reducing symptoms among those already experiencing long covid, they found.

Ivermectin does not prevent severe COVID-19, study finds | UPI.com

Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Treatment with the dewormer drug ivermectin failed to prevent patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 from progressing to serious illness, a study published Friday by JAMA Internal Medicine found.
Of 241 patients in the study with mild to moderate symptoms treated with the medication, 52, or 22% developed severe COVID-19, the data showed.
Meanwhile, 43 of 249 patients, or 17%, who received "standard" treatment, including corticosteroids and, in a handful of cases, other experimental drugs, progressed to serious illness from the virus, the researchers said.
"Essentially, our study findings have dismissed the notion of ivermectin being a 'miracle drug' against COVID-19," study co-author Dr. Steven Chee Loon Lim told UPI in an email.

No, only for sensible people. Those who have a daily mindlessness practice will continue using it.

Nasal Vaccines Could One Day Help Stop COVID-19 Spread | Time

When SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, infiltrates the body, it typically enters through the nose or mouth, then takes root and begins replicating.
But what if it could never get a foothold in the upper airways? That’s the promise of nasal COVID-19 vaccines, which are meant to prevent infection by blocking the virus at its point of entry.
