An introduction to Linux /etc/fstab file, used in Linux to mount the file system at boot time

As a server administrator or Linux desktop user or anyone who is new to Linux, understanding about /etc/fstab file in Linux and how to debug fstab issues are very important.

Fstab is a file system table used by the kernel during boot time to mount the file system. To put it in simple terms, you will create one or more partitions on your hard drive, and you will make an entry for each partition in fstab which will be read by the kernel during boot time and the file system will be automatically mounted.

By default, any partitions you create during the OS installation will be automatically added to the fstab file. Interestingly, they also touch on the /etc/mtab file as well.

Ja, es ist mal wieder soweit, ich benötige Hilfe nach meinem Upgrade von Ubuntu Linux auf die Version 16.04LTS.

Das Upgrade lief unkompliziert durch. Bis auf eine wesentliche Kleinigkeit. Meine Mounts in der fstab werden nicht automatisch beim Sytemstart eingebunden! Zuvor mit 14.04LTS kein Problem. Wenn ich die Mountpoints manuell auf der Console einbinge, dann klappt alles reibungslos.

Benötige mal wieder einen Tritt in den Hintern, um das Problem einzugrenzen. Hat sich denn in der 16.04 hierbei was wesentliches geändert, das ich evtl. übersehe?

If I want to share a #partition as the home/user directory between #Windows and #Linux, what's the best format, and what #fstab options should I be using?

Also, should it be one solid partition for all accounts, or is one partition per account feasible?
