This is close to ticking now. It's going to need a lot more adjustment. When this many parts have to be replaced, everything is out of sorts. I might need to locate a different regulator as I am pretty sure the pins on this one are not quite in the right place. The hairsprings on these older grades has only a slight overcoil.

This movement has a really cool, but highly problematic, lever-setting mechanism using a ring gear with teeth on both the inside and the outside. The lever action engages and disengages the ring from a two-level cannon pinion. Very interesting components here... But in practice, it's often hard to get enough tension to hold the ring against the cannon pinion snugly. Another issue is that there is no spring pressing the winding mode action against the ratchet wheel. It depends only on the turning action of the main wheel to push an idler in toward the barrel.

So far this movement feels like winding and setting will work. I had to made some adjustments to get it to wind. We'll see about the cannon pinion. If it is too loose it will slip. If it is too tight, the setting wheel will jump off. Sometimes the one spring in this system just can no longer push enough to turn a cannon pinion that is just tight enough to not slip while the movement is running.

There's a bad bend in the barrel cap (how does that even happen?), and the threads for the barrel bridge screws are stripped ('cause why not?). I found one odd-ball, blued, screw that will hold, so far.

The pallet fork is in very poor condition. One stone is loose, the other missing. The fork end is bent, and the guard pin is loose and will have to be replaced. Also, the pallet strangely is discolored (blued) from way over heating. That's not something I'll try to polish off, but it's surprising.

Anyway, the stone is now replaced and the part is overall straightened out. On to the guard pin. I just eye-balled all this, including the depth of the pallet stones, so I am sure several iterations of adjustment will be required. This is a pain on an 18 size Elgin since the pallet and escape all sit under the main plate. The movement is not easy to assemble and disassemble over and over - very time consuming.

Tested and measured and all the upper and lower replacement jeweling works correctly. The train is free, good end shake and side shake. Now on the rebuilding the pallet fork.

I couldn't find a better fitting jewel so I had to reduce the bezel on this one just a bit. I don't have many bezel chucks, but fortunately I have one that works for this job. Chucks for working on bezels have a recess so they can hold the smaller bit true while the outer diameter, or thickness, can be altered, or jewels can be installed.
