The World's Richest Little Isle (1982)

Few islands in the South Pacific look less promising from the air. Instead of the usual verdant atoll -all palm trees and beaches - the island is more like a chunk of gray lunar landscape encircled by a thin ribbon of green along the shoreline. In the interior, a few sparse clumps of vegetation stand out amid stark rock pinnacles. Clearly, this is not an ordinary tropical paradise.

Yet this unprepossessing island - 26 miles south of the Equator, about midway between Hawaii and Australia and hundreds of miles from anywhere -is the envy of the South Pacific. For this is the Republic of Nauru - all eight and a half square miles of it. Nauru, with a per capita income surpassing that of any oil-rich Arab nation, is the smallest and wealthiest independent democracy in the world.

Cohen is the leading authority on Earth's poplation limits and carrying capacity. He's the first to say that the question and answer are complicated, but that does not mean that there are no limits.

In his book, How many people can the earth support?, Cohen visits many estimates and/or claims regarding carrying capacity and explores the assumptions or logic behind many of these, which range from a low of about 100 million to highs over 12 trillion. Most such estimates cluster around 1--10 billion, and seem more credible than outliers, especially of the high-end group.

Switching to Renewables: How much energy is available?

A reasonably good explainer on the potential for powering humanity on solar power: It's interesting and better information than I'd feared, though it still omits a lot, mostly in terms of baked-in assumptions of energ consumpion increases from future wealth and population increases. An apparently-large solar energy surplus rapidly diminishes within just the next century.

Basic facts:

• Global energy consumption is about 400 quadrillion BTU (quad), or 10,000 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe), or 115 petawatt hours (PWh -- 115 million GWh) equivalent. Those are units, and they're big. The important thing is to look at the total amounts and what they translate to on a per-person basis.
• US consumption is about 100 quad, / 2,500 mtoe.
• Total incident raw solar power is about 7,000 times human energy use. That's what "as much solar energy falls on the entire Earth in 1 hours as humans use in an entire year" translates to. But after figuring in various losses (land vs. water, usable daily hours, panel efficiency, other losses), what's left is closer to 100--200x current total human energy use. And some of that's got to go to both our own food supply and the rest of the environment.
• The Rest of The World (Non-OECD countries / countries outside North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia) uses a tiny fraction of the energy of the West. That's 6x the people (roughly) and about 1/3 the per-capita energy use. Note that this includes China and India, which have greatly in creased energyy usage per capita over the past 3 decades as they've industrialised.
• Global population is projected to grow to somewhere between 9--12 billion by 2100 or so.
• There's still the question of energy storage, dispatchable energy use, and the need for fuels in transportation uses, most especially marine shipping, air travel, and rockets, none of which can rely on battery or grid-supplied electricity.

Even just accounting for present population and average OECD consumption, that's another 6 * 3 or 18 time more energy consumption that is presumed just to bring the rest of the world up to average OECD levels of energy affluence.

We only had about a 100x headway in net solar energy surplus to begin with, this would cut through about 1/5 of that. Without considering future energy growth or additional energy affluence among either OECD or other nations.

Efficiency gains, especially reducing the two-thirds of all energy lost (mostly in conversion from thermal to mechanical energy) will buy us back some of that, but this is a one-time bonus, and it's going to be much less than the total lost energy. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics always wins out, and there will be energy efficiency losses.

We're using a lot of energy, and the dreams we're selling our children and the world involve a huge increase on even that. I don't doubt that the future will be solar powered, mostly. I do have doubts it will be a high-energy solar future.

Again, the ultimate critique here is not against renewables. We have no other choice. Our high-energy, large-population lifestyle is inherently unsustainable.

Sweden will lift COVID-19 restrictions later this month

Sweden has been an outlier in aspects of its handling of the disease, shunning hard lockdowns throughout the pandemic and relying heavily on voluntary recommendations regarding issues such as social distancing and hygiene.

However, public gatherings such as concerts, sporting events and venues such as bars and restaurants have operated under tight crowd limits, curbs that are now set to be removed on Sept. 29, along with a recommendation to work from home.

Ivan #Illich was a very sharp philosopher, writer of several books that critique deeply ingrained methods and institutions in our society.
Silja Samerski wrote this wonderful article on Illich’s work. Illich’s views on #degrowth are more topical than ever, now that it becomes more and more clear that there are limits to what our society can provide. However, where should these limits be drawn, on what basis, and by whom? Illich’s controversial view is that these limits should not be based on economical #limits, but on the added value that technology itself has for humans. According to Illich, we should limit the use of certain technologies, not because we cannot afford to pay for them, but because they do not add true value to our lives. This goes the same whether technology is immaterial (like schooling, the healthcare system, electronic currencies), or material (like genetic manipulation).

This article revisits Ivan Illich's call for limiting the use of tools and elaborates its implications for degrowth. Illich analyzed growth not as an economic ideology, but - more radically - as the result of a historically unique mindset that turns tools from means into ends. Unlike many advocates of degrowth, he did not propose alternative modes of resource consumption and distribution, but instead tried to defend vernacular subsistence and conviviality against the industrialized satisfaction of needs. Any meaningful limit to growth, Illich insisted, has to be rooted in the defense of a sphere beyond production and consumption. Yet, as he himself realized, in an advanced technological society this distinction between autonomous action and heteronomous need satisfaction is blurred. Modern tools – and especially the computer - not only paralyze innate capabilities, but shape self-perception and subjectivities so as to increase dependencies on technological systems. On the basis of Illich's works, this article will argue first that degrowth requires limits to material as well as immaterial technologies, including political management and professional services; second that these limits have to be based on the appropriate balance between vernacular subsistence and engineered instrumentalities: and, third, that political decisions demand the cultivation of a critical awareness of the symbolic power of modern technologies.

Instagram Launches ‘Limits’ to Block Unwanted Comments and DMs

Instagram has announced a new feature that is designed to curb hate speech and protect users from abuse on the platform. Called "Limits," the feature will automatically hide comments and DM requests from people who don't follow a user.

The feature is designed to help protect specifically creators and public figures from what it calls a "rush of abusive comments" and direct messages that accompany certain high-profile posts. "Limits" is a feature the compabny says is easy to turn on and will automatically hide comments and direct message requests from people who don't actively follow that account or who only recently started following them.

Instagram says that it developed the feature because it heard that content creators and public figures will sometimes experience sudden spikes of comments and direct message requests from people they don't know. Sometimes these messages are positive, such as congratulations or support, but other times can be unwanted. To protect them, Instagram says Limits can be turned on to avoid this influx altogether.

"Our research shows that a lot of negativity towards public figures comes from people who don’t actually follow them, or who have only recently followed them, and who simply pile on in the moment," Instagram says in a blog post about the update. "We saw this after the recent Euro 2020 final, which resulted in a significant -- and unacceptable -- spike in racist abuse towards players. Creators also tell us they don’t want to switch off comments and messages completely; they still want to hear from their community and build those relationships. Limits allows you to hear from your long-standing followers, while limiting contact from people who might only be coming to your account to target you."

While most beneficial for those high-profile accounts, the feature will be available to everyone on the platform globally starting today. The feature can be toggled from privacy settings and the company says that it is working on exploring ways to detect when an account may be experiencing a spike in comments and direct messages and will proactively prompt a user to activate Limits.

The feature is in addition to another anti-abuse rollout that Instagram added in April called Hidden Words which allows users to automatically filter offensive words, phrases, and emojis into a Hidden Folder that will never have to be opened. Instagram has also added warnings in the app that detects abusive language and warns a person that they may be in violation of the app's Community Guidelines. The warning used to show up after a second or third comment, but will now show up -- stronger -- the first time.

"We hope these new features will better protect people from seeing abusive content, whether it’s racist, sexist, homophobic or any other type of abuse," Instagram says. "We know there’s more to do, including improving our systems to find and remove abusive content more quickly, and holding those who post it accountable."

That's interestingly bi-modal. The 1900s peak was expected. The 2000s one somewhat less so, though it speaks to how much the cruise industry had grown since the 1980s. The long nearly-dry spell from 1936 to 1996 is particularly notable. That's 60 years, and though there were some entrants, the SS Normandie at 314m (1,029 ft) and 83,404 GRT was very nearly the longest and highest-tonnage vessel through the entire period. The RMS Queen Elizabeth and SS France managed to just edge her out in length, and the Elizabeth was just slightly higher in tonnage. The post-1990 era ships are heavier (to 137,308 GT), but remain shorter than the Normandie. The age of transoceanic airline travel (beginning seriously in the 1950s) and jet airliners (especially with the Boeing 707, beginning in October 1958) heralded the end of regular transoceanic commercial passenger service (and much continental passenger rail travel), as well as the notable subsidies of postal delivery ("RMS" stands for "royal mail ship", and carried mail under contract to the British Royal Mail. Other countries' ships offered similar services, and postal trains, with dedicated mail-sorting cars, were a huge boon to domestic rail service, being phased out in the US with the introduction of the Zone Improvement Plan, or ZIP code, in 1963). The subsequent cruise industry was dedicated far more to the voyage than the destination.

The SS Great Eastern, launched in 1858, at a time of very heavy reliance on trans-Atlantic sea shipping, is even more notable. At 18,915 GRT and 211m (692 ft), she held records for 41 years (tonnage) and 43 years (overall length), with her reign ending with her scrapping, and the title-holders from 1888-1899/1900 actually being smaller in dimension or displacement. The Great Eastern was near the limits of technology of the time, and proved uneconomical for much of her life.

The period since 2018 has seen no new recordbreaking ships commissioned, and in a post-Covid world, that spell may last a while.
