Shocking treatment of this poor man!
If you're not aware, during the last 140 years since the infamous Milan conference, until recently teaching the Deaf via sign language has been discouraged and even actively abolished by hearing higher-ups. Instead the precious school time has been wasted trying to 'cure' children of Deafness by barbaric methods used in the pursuit of 'teaching them to speak' by 'teachers of the Deaf' who barely know any sign, if any.
The result being that many Deaf children have emerged from an education that has taught them own some cases to form words that they can't hear but has left them criminally short of an education that could have been delivered far less effortlessly had sign been used as a teaching method.
All this to say that it was completely ignorant to assume the the man had much, or any, experience of expressing his concerns, health and medical history using written English.
We can do better. ☹️
