Francis Fukuyama: Donald Trump not only wants to roll back neoliberalism and woke liberalism, but is a major threat to classical liberalism itself.

The blowout victory of Donald Trump and the Republican party on Tuesday night will lead to major changes in important policy areas, from immigration to Ukraine. But the significance of the election extends way beyond these specific issues, and represents a decisive rejection by American voters of liberalism and the particular way that the understanding of a “free society” has evolved since the 1980s.

When Trump was first elected in 2016, it was easy to believe that this event was an aberration. He was running against a weak opponent who didn’t take him seriously, and in any case Trump didn’t win the popular vote. When Biden won the White House four years later, it seemed as if things had snapped back to normal after a disastrous one-term presidency.

Following Tuesday’s vote, it now seems that it was the Biden presidency that was the anomaly, and that Trump is inaugurating a new era in US politics and perhaps for the world as a whole. Americans were voting with full knowledge of who Trump was and what he represented. Not only did he win a majority of votes and is projected to take every single swing state, but the Republicans retook the Senate and look like holding on to the House of Representatives. Given their existing dominance of the Supreme Court, they are now set to hold all the major branches of government.

The rise of these distorted understandings of liberalism drove a major shift in the social basis of political power. The working class felt that leftwing political parties were no longer defending their interests, and began voting for parties of the right. Thus the Democrats lost touch with their working-class base and became a party dominated by educated urban professionals. The former chose to vote Republican. In #Europe, Communist party voters in #France and Italy defected to Marine #LePen and #GiorgiaMeloni.

All of these groups were unhappy with a free-trade system that eliminated their livelihoods even as it created a new class of super-rich, and were unhappy as well with progressive parties that seemingly cared more for foreigners and the environment than their own condition.

Donald #Trump not only wants to roll back #neoliberalism and woke #liberalism, but is a major threat to classical liberalism itself. This threat is visible across any number of policy issues; a new Trump presidency will not look anything like his first term. The real question at this point is not the malignity of his intentions, but rather his ability to actually carry out what he threatens.

The neoliberal shift wasn't actually about shrinking the state, what it was about was about crushing collective power. And you see this with like the first moves that politicians like that and Reagan undertake when they come into power it was crush the labor movement. And there was a a discourse that surrounded this well so there was the physical assertion of the power of the state, there was the literal beating up of minors the use of the police to um to put them in their place. But there was this ideological shift as well which was you are not a worker you are not a citizen you are a consumer you are um you know an entrepreneur of the self right. And a lot of neoliberal policies were designed to push this it was like we will allow you to buy your own house we will privatize your pension you will be able to take out loads of debt your life will become this balance sheet of assets and liabilities and it's up to you to manage that. If you manage it well you will do well and you will succeed if you manage it badly you will fail and that will be entirely your own fault.

Jeremy Corbyn—the previous anti-Neoliberal leader of the Labour Party, who held onto his seat as an independent, after Labour’s current pro-Neoliberal leader Kier Starmer banned him from standing for Labour—put the election result in context when he commented that Labour “has put forward a manifesto that is thin to put it mildly, and doesn’t offer a serious economic alternative to what the Conservative government is doing.”

The root problem, as I noted in my previous post (Substack;Patreon), is that both parties—and almost all of the bureaucracy, the media, and economic thinktanks, as a reader pointed out—have Neoliberalism “embedded in them”.

In the previous post I asked, “why do both sides of politics deliver Neoliberal, austerity-oriented policies when in power? Since they end up being disastrous for them politically, why don’t they offer and try something different?”

The best answer to that question was given by the main architect of mainstream economics, Paul Samuelson. In the foreword to a study guide for lecturers using his textbook Economics, he wrote that:

I don’t care who writes a nation’s laws—or crafts its advanced treaties—if I can write its economics textbooks. The first lick is a privileged one, impinging on the beginner’s tabula rasa [blank slate] at its most impressionable state. (Samuelson 1990)

I was just in a meeting with NoQ, a Swedish organization that aims to help #homeless people find shelter for the night. The sad truth about #Sweden is that #neoliberalism has destroyed (and is destroying) parts of our social services and care for each other, and is creating a #caste system. But people aren't talking about it because the #narratives is to a large extent controlled by the mainstream/corporate #media

Anybody believing this should get educated on exactly what Pasteurization is and the enforcement of the same via U.S. regulation for DECADES going back to the 19th century. This person hasn't done his proper homework.

Real simple answer to those reassuring about H5N1:Real easy to have a "Pasteurized so all good" take. Really founded on "Just World" adjacent assumptions that agents here dint outright lie to you.

The a priori assumptiom here being, (1) we have a functional government that engages in quality assurance and audits/checks these things and (2) corporations dont take shortcuts or mislead or misrepresent their product.

That belies the last 24 years of broken neoliberal regulation & the tendency of corporations to take shortcuts in response to supply issues, which is very possible with H5N1 running roughshod on the suppliers (cows).

It isnt alarmist at all to be concerned with viral fragments found in milk, if you lack a priori assumptions & let the last 20 years of broken governance & corporate deception speak for itself.

Your assumptions about the world order of Capitalism are flawed & Pollyannaish.

Sweden’s schools minister declares free school ‘system failure’ | Sweden | The Guardian

#politics #education #neoliberalism

Sweden has declared a “system failure” in the country’s free schools, pledging the biggest shake-up in 30 years and calling into question a model in which profit-making companies run state education.

What a surprise: running public services for profit always ends in degraded service, suffering people, and rich plutocrats (hang them! Guillotine them!).

Neoliberal democracy. Instead of citizens, it produces consumers. Instead of communities, it produces shopping malls. The net result is an atomized society of disengaged individuals who feel demoralized and socially powerless.

In sum, neoliberalism is the immediate and foremost enemy of genuine participatory democracy, not just in the United States but across the planet, and will be for the foreseeable future.

source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/willskipworth/2023/10/03/amazon-allegedly-used-secret-algorithm-to-raise-prices-on-consumers-ftc-lawsuit-reveals/

The algorithm was able to track how much Amazon’s power in the e-commerce field would get competitors to move their prices, and in instances in which competitors didn’t move their prices, the algorithm would return Amazon’s prices back down, according to the Journal.

(I don't link to the original source the "Wall Street Journal" because of the paywall.)

Amazon is #neoliberalism in its final stage. It is no longer about manufacturing #costs and fair prices, but only about how to eliminate the #competition with low prices or how high you can rip off your own customers.
