the rose "Elizabeth Harkness" with Botrytis spots ! :D ! caused by rain and/or cold
the John F Kennedy rose is very susceptible to botrytis spots/staining, which is what endeared it to me - the splatter. Someone had a joyfully wicked sense of rosey humour.
But back to Elizabeth: very hardy, withstands a few years of being beheaded by whippersnipper, survives on rainwater (we get a lot. it's raining now) but certinly perks up with a bit of attention, such as a feed of sheep dags kept juust out of reach of the dripline or a splosh of liquid manure. If you have a new wheelbarrow and a pile of sheep dags and it rains all the time, there is liquid plantfood in the barrow each morning #slackarse-gardening.
The rose has a great scent which is quite strong but, like many low-growers, best sniffed when belly-down on the ground. Or you could stand over it. That feels a bit silly though.
oh! what to do about botrytis? nothing. enjoy it. there's nothing you can do.
it's my favourite :)
