I was talking to a neighbour the other day and the topic turned to current events. We agreed we are very lucky to be in Canada. She was a little concerned about immigrants/refugees and asked if I thought there were a lot of bad people getting in. I am not. Immigrants complain about how long the vetting takes to get into Canada which, to me means they are doing as thorough a job as possible; if I wanted to be a criminal, I would do it where I could get lost in a crowd rather than scrutinized. I also said, think of how hard it is to move across town – what strong motivation people must have to move to Canada which isn’t close to anywhere warm and is so different than where a lot of people are coming from. We should be kind and helpful as they are far from home.
It reminded me of a twitter thread I was reading where someone gave 2 arguments for accepting diversity. One is we’re all very similar, just different through experiences and the other is we’re all different and that difference makes us special and worthy (maybe poor phrasing on my part there). I find the first way of thinking far more compelling – which way do you think?
