Why howdy there #Checkin people!
Today we’re homeward bound after spending Christmas in Reno.
Our travel there was quite an adventure. We split the drive up into two parts, the first leg from San Diego to Bishop in California’s Owen’s valley. The second leg was supposed to be from Bishop to Reno up 395.
We’d planned the trip a month ahead, only to find that an atmospheric river would deliver heavy rain and snow along our route from Bishop to Reno through Mammoth where a foot of snow was expected every hour for several hours, possibly up to seven feet. Yikes.
We took an alternate route out east though the high desert, through some lower altitudes, but still encountered some hours of driving through falling snow, with heavy rainfall for the rest. We stopped in Fallon for food and gas. The 4 hour drive took six.
When we arrived at my in-laws’ place in Reno, there was fresh snowfall on the ground, and we couldn’t get up the driveway from the street as the snow was too deep. My brother-in-law Kenny had to come down and back the car up an alternate route to make it to the top of the hill.
RN hundreds are stuck in Tahoe and other mountainous areas, and it's looking like that's not going to change any time soon.
So Kenny says our best chance to get out will be around 10 tomorrow because another front is moving in. We’re going out to the 95 and the 6 to Bishop where we’ll ride out the storm, and then San Diego the following day. I have snow chains in case we need them along the way. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they won't be necessary.
