We finally got our microgeneration agreement for our solar panels. We bumped up our array from 4.8 kW to 7.2 kW because of our EV charger. While I understood we would get more energy production, it wasn’t intuitive just how much difference it would make, especially in December and January. We went from around 100kW to generating 200 to 300 kW in a month. This means we could net zero our daylight hours on a sunny day! Cool when your power is NG sourced.

Hiya! Great to see you here at the #Checkin forum, a place to connect with a diverse, very interesting and kind-hearted bunch of people from all over. If you're #newhere, this daily post is much like a virtual fave coffee shop or water cooler. The weekly mod, me (@su ann lim) this week, introduces a topic, like a special of the day menu item to respond to or not. You're always free to comment on anything else that happens to be on your mind. Confession - I enjoy checkin posts where multiple conversations are going on at the same time! 😂😂😂

Today's topic - what's something you did recently that you hadn't done in a long time?

Pour moi, together with a few friends it's a night of music and dance at our local legion!!! Back story - what seems like eons ago, if one wanted live music entertainment in this region, one had to go to night spots in downtown Vancouver. Fast forward to the present - the majority of "night spots' have disappeared and those that exist require a long commute to get to, charge insane prices, and are not friendly places. Fast forward to today - recently, we started noticing local legions (essentially humble meeting halls) promoting live tribute band music. For a lark, a few pals and I decided to check the closest one out. What's not to like about a reasonable ticket price, a very short uber ride, reasonable refreshments and eats and familar sounding live music. Examples of recent tribute performances - Van Morrison, Doors, Tragically Hip, etc. Surprise, surprise what a blast! Well, there were young ones discovering a retro experience but the majority of participants, despite possible age-related challenges, rediscovered the dance floor. What was unique - it was a relaxed community experience. Most stayed till closing! 🤣🤣🤣 Your turn!

Stupid Pet Tricks

I refer to indiosyncratic capabilities that people have with little, if any, useful application as "stupid pet tricks" (SPTs).

My SPT is the ability to identify people merely by listening to their voice. So, for example:

• There's a scene in The Majestic in which unseen "Hollywood executives" are engaged in an inane conversation in which they are making bad decisions. The voices are all done by famous writer-directors who may very well have written the dialogue themselves: Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner, Sidney Pollack, Garry Marshall, and Paul Mazursky. I was able to identify all but Mazursky, whom I had never heard before. I found it especially entertaining because I realized in real-time, the directors were giving Hollywood executives their comeuppance.

• For years, Jimmy Dean did the voice-overs on his TV sausage ads. For years after he died, they continued the recorded voice, while changing the graphics, or adding dialogue from actors. Then, they started auditioning voices to replace Dean. They were all wide-off the mark IMAO, including the guy they settled on.

• When I've actually heard a performer before, I can identify the singer on The Masked Singer. So, for example, I identified Dick Van Dyke. I was uncertain at first, because Dick & Jerry Van Dyke sounded very much alike, especially as they got older, but then I remembered that Jerry was dead. Most, of the time, however, I have no idea who the performers are, even if they showed up in their birthday suits.

Cinematic Guilty Pleasures

Many of us have rules for books, movies and TV that we want to watch, and that we admit to. And then, we have the guilty pleasures -- those that don't fit our rules that we sometimes watch, but seldom own up to.

In my case, it's the "blowed up real good movies" (in the words of a pacifist friend of mine). Some that qualify for the title according to both me and my friend (yes, he, the pacifist, likes them too) are:

• Heartbreak Ridge

Today's Topic Is the Weather

I have an interesting perspective on the weather, as I've lived or worked all across the US, each region for a prolonged period or frequent visits. With the exception of perhaps CA and FL, everybody thinks their city/state/region has the most variable weather. In my experience, however, Colorado takes the cake. On the whole, CO's weather is mild, but when it comes to variability, there's no comparison.

In the winter, people will see the Broncos play on TV, and there's a snowstorm with snow drifts measured in feet, not inches. Friends or family will call to commiserate about the weather, and they will be incredulous that the next day it's in the high 50's and there is not a snowflake to be found. Also, signs on mountain roads warn you to climb to safety in case of flash flood. Few heed the warning when it's 70 and the sun is brighter than you've ever seen, on either coast, the midwest, or the south. Then, boom, flash flood.

Today’s topic is:

What is are the most unusual experiences you've had with a child?

My answer:

When Katie was 3, she asked me if I wanted to attend the tea party she was having with her doll and teddy bear. Of course, I agreed, but I really didn't understand the level of commitment that a child can bring to pretend/play. Her tea set was entirely made of aluminum, and the tea, water and scones were "ethereal". She completely blew me away by the care she took in pouring the tea into the cups, distributing the "scones" and in carefully sipping the tea, as well as asking me if I was pleased. And, pleased I was.

This probably sounds very mundane, because it is impossible for my mere words to convey the level of commiment that she made in play.

Beth was so impressed too, that the following week she and Katie made actual tea and crumpets and we all partook, with Katie, again, as the hostess. (Katie had seen tea and crumpets on a Brit cartoon.)

It feels like affordable housing is a concern in most cities. One solution is to convert office buildings into residential suites. It seems some cities are allowing for plans with no bedroom windows. Given the choice between windows in a common living space and windows in a bedroom, I would choose the windows in the common space. The bedroom doors could have windows with privacy shutters to catch natural light. Since the conversions are government funded units, in my opinion, must be low cost to rent and rent controlled.

Disclaimer - I live in a house with unusually large windows in all rooms. Bedroom windows in conversions are being used for light, not escape.

Which is more important to you if you have to choose? Bedroom or common space in suite windows? Do you design ideas? Mine would be to have flat panel faux windows with LEDs that shift spectrums with daylight hours and can display outside views.
