Many people in the Soviet Union were not really poor, but they simply could not afford the basics, because there was never enough of them.

To buy a car, you had to wait on a waiting list for years. To buy a coat or a pair of winter boots, you often had to stand in line for hours, only to find that your size was already sold out.
