As the world is getting excited about the Erdogan's latest PR trick to hide his 6 months of criminal complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza by supporting the "Flotilla 2" from Turkey to Gaza, sitting and listening to the song of my favorite Swedish singer late Björn Afzelius who wrote the song about a similar even in mid 80s to take a boat with many famous artists and activists from all around the world to Gaza from Greece.
It hurts, really hurts that the world has to witness once again the same thing we have seen so many times before, but hoping that the kids of today are stronger and more successful than we were, maybe they can finally help ending this ongoing criminal actions by the "chosen people" against the "human animals".
And I listened to it one more time, with tears in my eyes after watching the videos of families trying to identify remains of their loved one recovered from a mass grave at Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis. I listen to it as I did live in 1990, and so many times after that in the past 36 years and sadly, the news on the TV is the same, so is the reaction from the Israeli politicians and our beloved neutral high morality leaders.

This would make for a particularly vile alternative history.
The truth was that Gruinard Island had been the site of a clandestine attempt by the UK during World War Two to weaponise anthrax, a deadly bacterial infection. The exact details of what had happened there would only come to light when in 1997 the government declassified a film that the military had shot at the time, which detailed the experiments.
The plan was to infect linseed cakes with Anthrax spores and drop them by plane into cattle pastures around Germany. The cows would eat the cakes and contract anthrax, as would those who ate the infected meat. Anthrax is a naturally occurring but deadly organism. Symptoms of infection can take time to fully appear but when they do they are horrific and can become lethal very quickly. The proposed plan would have decimated Germany's meat supply, and triggered a nationwide anthrax contamination, resulting in an enormous death toll.
A military team, under the supervision of scientists, then began to conduct chilling experiments. Using livestock brought over to the island to serve as test subjects, they started a series of trials releasing anthrax spores across the island's terrain. The results were devastating: within days of exposure the sheep started showing symptoms and rapidly began to die. Their infected bodies were autopsied and then incinerated or buried under tonnes of rubble.
In the decades that followed the end of World War Two, attempts were made to decontaminate the site using chemical treatments and controlled burning, but they proved largely ineffective. A series of tests in 1971 showed that while there were no longer anthrax spores on the surface, they still lingered on in the soil underneath, posing a grave risk to anyone setting foot on the island. Years later, scientists returned to try decontamination efforts again, soaking the island in a mixture of seawater and formaldehyde, as well as removing and incinerating contaminated topsoil. This time they were more successful and finally, on 24 April 1990, after 48 years of quarantine, the UK Government declared Gruinard Island anthrax-free.

"So, we had everything in place to produce weapons-grade plutonium," says Thomas Jonter, author of The Key to Nuclear Restraint: The Swedish Plans to Acquire Nuclear Weapons During the Cold War. The plan included two reactors. "One, Ågesta, a heavy-water reactor south of Stockholm, and another, Marviken, built outside the city of Norrköping but never put into production and the idea was to build 100 tactical weapons," says Jonter.
"We knew exactly how it should be done. We had everything except the reprocessing facility and the weapons carrier system."
In April 1957, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) judged Sweden as having "a sufficiently developed reactor program to enable it to produce some nuclear weapons within the next five years", an assessment that soon cut the timeline to four years.

Since then, they have been acting (shamelessly) together in so many questions and turned Sweden into one of the worst countries in Europe when it comes to quality of life and wealth gap. not to mention security and gang related violence.
But, they have managed to stay in power, despite all the predictions they wouldn't and thanks to Putin, they have made the country a full member of the criminal enterprise NATO.

This one popped up on my Reddit feed as a promoted article for some reason. Why Scientific American feels it's a good idea to promote free articles about deciphering ancient texts I don't know, but it feels like some kind of bizarre swindle to expect to be presented with rampant commercialism but get a quite interesting article instead. How strangely disconcerting.
Almost all classical literature has come down to us from medieval monks, choosy in what they resolved to copy. As a result, relatively little “original” writing from antiquity exists, which means classical literature, from our point of view, is a panorama seen through a pinhole. We have seven plays by Aeschylus, but we know the tragedian wrote at least 10 times more than that. The preserved papyri in Herculaneum are our best shot at rescuing lost works, and some classicists suspect that even more texts could remain in areas of the villa yet to be excavated. “Who knows what’s there?” says Annalisa Marzano, a professor of classical archaeology at the University of Bologna and a trustee of the Friends of Herculaneum Society. In addition to works by the big hitters such as the poets Virgil and Horace, there’s also the tantalizing possibility of finding writing from authors “we know absolutely nothing about,” Marzano says.
Well, I'd certainly like me some more texts from antiquity, who wouldn't ? And, long story short (and it is really quite a long but interesting story), it looks like that's exactly what we're getting.
The readable text comprises around 5 percent of the first scroll, and it is from the same text as the earlier discoveries. It is a previously unread tract, probably by Philodemus, about pleasure. Are good things in small quantities more delightful than copious good things? Not at all, the author concludes. “As, too, in the case of food,” writes the author, “we do not right away believe things that are scarce to be absolutely more pleasant than those which are abundant.”
The fields of papyrology and classics are changed forever. Thanks in large part to a group of amateur AI builders, we now have tools for reading the unopened Herculaneum papyri. If the technological advances continue and can be rolled out to the many unopened scrolls, says Tobias Reinhardt, a classics scholar at the University of Oxford who helped to confirm the winning entries, “we could see a recovery of ancient texts at a volume not seen since the Renaissance.”
