There had been a few posts regarding #framing recently, so I would like to add another beautiful piece of framing to that collection.

Just look at the headline: China Coast Guard drives away intruding Philippine Navy gunboat into China's Huangyan Island on Tue

That's absolutely heroic. Several boats of the tiny China Coast Guard plucked up courage to face a single boat of the mighty Philippine Navy. But that's not yet the best. Where did that happen again? Huangyan Island

Now this is an article in English, not Chinese. Many of the islands in the South China Sea have (different) names in different languages, so you would expect an English-based name in an English article. If the name sounds like it has a Chinese origin, there is probably no other name, right?

Well, not quite. And this is not quite an island. It's a shoal/atoll, in English rather known as Scarborough Shoal... Sounds much more familiar? Let's have a look at a map!

Oops, it looks like that dot is pretty close to the Philippines! 220km close, or 119nm. How far did the UN say a country's Exclusive Economic Zone reached? 200nm? That sounds more than 119... So, let's get this straight: The PRC is blocking the #Philippines from a place in their own EEZ?

But perhaps the PRC has good reason to throw the Philippines out? Perhaps they are even closer? Hmm, the closest place seems to be Leizhou Peninsula: 540 nautical miles (1,000 kilometers). That sounds rather far. But the article sounded heroic, you can't deny that. And to be honest, I think the first serious clash south of the PRC may not be PRC against Taiwan, but PRC against the Philippines...
