China publicizes for the first time what it claims is a 2016 agreement with Philippines - ABC News https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/china-publicizes-time-claims-2016-agreement-philippines-109902201

For the first time, China has publicized what it claims is an unwritten 2016 agreement with the #Philippines over access to South China Sea islands.

Ah yes, unwritten agreements... The PRC does have experience with those, like the ominous "1992 consensus" regarding Taiwan...

A statement from the Chinese Embassy in Manila said the “temporary special arrangement” agreed to during a visit to Beijing by former president Rodrigo Duterte allowed small scale fishing around the islands but restricted access by military, coast guard and other official planes and ships to the 12 nautical mile (22 kilometer) limit of territorial waters.

Who in their right mind would agree to that?😲

China's defense ministry warns Philippines after South China Sea incident | Taiwan News | 2024-03-24 17:19:00 https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/5121946

BEIJING (Reuters) — China's defense ministry warned the Philippines against "provocative" actions and said China would safeguard its territorial sovereignty on Sunday, a day after an incident in disputed waters of the South China Sea.

"We warn the Philippines to stop making any remarks that may lead to the intensification of conflicts and escalation of the situation, and stop all infringing and provocative actions," the defense ministry said in a statement.

Translation: Shut up and stay at home, because we want your territory!

So, what happened?

The remarks came after China's coast guard said had it taken measures against Philippine vessels in disputed waters near the Second Thomas Shoal and Spratly Islands a day before, actions that the Philippines had called "irresponsible and provocative".

The incident included the use of water cannons against a civilian boat hired to resupply troops, the Philippine task force on the South China Sea said in a statement on Saturday.

FYI: We are talking about the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines, an area including everything within 200nm from the shore. For comparison: It's 1000km to the PRC coast. Or in other words: This is ridiculous. But if no other country assists the Philippines, the outcome is pretty clear.

China Attacks Philippine Ship, Injures Crew in Latest Escalation of South China Sea Standoff - USNI News https://news.usni.org/2024/03/23/china-attacks-philippine-ship-injures-crew-in-latest-escalation-of-south-china-sea-standoff

Chinese attempts to stop the Philippine resupply missions have escalated since they began last summer. While Manila has strengthened its defense and security relations with the U.S., Australia and Japan and brought the issue to international headlines through a media campaign, China has doubled down on its efforts through the deployment of new measures and increasing the amount of vessels deployed to block the missions.

“We need to start calling this what it is–China’s illegal blockade of an outpost within the Philippines’ own lawful exclusive economic zone,” Ray Powell, director of the SeaLight project at Stanford University’s Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation, told USNI News following today’s incident.

It's getting worse...

Things are heating up again in the waters south of the PRC. First there was a strange incident in which two people drowned. The PRC says it was a fishing boat that had been in the waters around Kinmen, an island belonging to Taiwan/the ROC, but very close to the PRC. However, a fishing boat can 1) not outrun a coastguard boat and 2) does not capsize easily, unless Godzilla drags them down. Another article mentioned a speedboat, which is much more likely, as it is sufficiently fast and unstable for the described incident. So very likely people from the PRC were speeding into waters they didn't belong to and then ran - and did so in a way that made their boat capsize and got two people drowned.

However, the PRC is now very "concerned about the safety of Chinese fishermen", which led to them sending their own coastguard into waters around Kinmen and stopping a tourist boat there, checking the papers of every person on board. Basically they officially entered waters belonging to Taiwan and claimed authority there. But it's not just about #Taiwan.

There is still the problem with the second Thomas Shoal. The PRC escalated their bullying of Philippine supply boats heading to a grounded ship in the Second Thomas Shoal. This is in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the #Philippines, less than 200km from their coast, while being 1000km from the PRC coast. (EEZ is defined as everything within 200nm from the coast.) The PRC called the supply run an "intrusion into their territory" and this time, coast guard ships from both sides bumped into each other. Please observe that only the PH sailors put out fenders, while the PRC sailors were busy filming.

That's the current level of escalation, so use your imagination for the next one.

As a result of the wars unleashed by the U.S. after September 11, 2001, 38,000,000 civilians were displaced.

This is the second highest result in world history. Only World War II resulted in more refugees.

Direct military aggressions, the so-called "war on terror" which led to the creation of ISIS, and economic strangulation have all led to disastrous consequences for the people of a number of states in the Middle East and North Africa, forcing ordinary people to flee their homes, cities, villages and states to other countries.

According to a report https://t.co/MLXyekTZTQ by the Watson Institute for International Studies (an interdisciplinary research center at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA) and with the assistance of Boston University:

  1. #Afghanistan - 5.9 million refugees
  2. #Pakistan - 3.7 million refugees
  3. #Yemen - 4.6 million refugees
  4. #Somalia - 4.3 million refugees
  5. #Philippines - 1.8 million refugees
  6. #Libya - 1.2 million refugees
  7. #Syria - 7.1 million refugees

The report is based on data from 2001 to 2020 + some data collected in 2021.

It is based on the UN data, U.S. documents and information from public sources.

However, the report itself states that 38,000,000 is a very conservative estimate and in reality, the figure can reach from 49,000,000 to 60,000,000, which actually reaches the figures of World War II.

...

To these processes can be added the huge number of refugees from #Ukraine after the U.S.-backed coup d'état and civil war that broke out there.
