Stars in our spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy go up and down (relative to the galactic plane) in a giant wave known as the "Radcliffe Wave". Our sun is not a part of it, but it is very close, with the closest point being only 500 light-years away from us. The whole wave is 9,000 light-years long.
