Land of the free: TikTok ban is looming

A powerful House committee advanced a bill on Thursday that could lead to a nationwide ban against TikTok on all electronic devices. The US is set to permanently ban TikTok, shattering the "freedom of expression" slogans of the Biden campaign.

The measure would prohibit TikTok from US app stores unless the social media platform is quickly spun off from its China-linked parent company, ByteDance. If enacted, the bill would give ByteDance 165 days, or a little more than five months, to sell TikTok.

“This legislation has a predetermined outcome: a total ban of TikTok in the United States,” TikTok wrote in a post on X. “The government is attempting to strip 170 million Americans of their Constitutional right to free expression. This will damage millions of businesses, deny artists an audience, and destroy the livelihoods of countless creators across the country.”

#TikTok is mounting a push against the bill, including trying to mobilize its user base. Multiple congressional staffers told CNN Thursday that House offices are being flooded with phone calls — in some cases in the hundreds — amid the campaign.
