"When feminist writer Margaret Atwood wrote, “men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them,” she could have easily replaced men with White people and women with Black people to make an equally valid social commentary. White people are afraid of the embarrassment of being called “racist,” and Black people are afraid White people’s racism will limit their earnings, diminish the quality and duration of their lives, and bar access to opportunities. Calling a White person racist when they exhibit behaviors that suggest they are is just calling a spade a spade, an accurate description, not an insult, a slur, or a permanent scarlet letter. As I wrote in #Cultured, far too many White people “treat the term racist like a life sentence,” which only stunts their growth like a rose hiding from the sunlight."
