October 29 is the 302nd day of the year, and the 44th Friday. Only 9 Fridays left! 63 days remain until the end of the year, and only 58 days until Christmas. Yikes!
It’s also the anniversary of the Stock Market Crash on Black Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out thousands of investors, and stock tickers ran hours behind because the machinery could not handle the tremendous volume of trading. Partly due to the crash America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression of the 1930s.
But most importantly, it’s National Cat Day!
National Cat Day seeks to raise awareness about the thousands of cats in need of rescue. This day also encourages spaying and neutering cats to help control their population. In the US, approximately 3.4 million cats enter animal rescue shelters each year. Of these, 1.4 million are euthanized. National Cat Day was created by pet activist Colleen Paige in 2005.
All my cats are rescues. I got two of them at Animal Control, pulled one as a kitten off the street, and was adopted by a neighborhood tom after he had been caught, neutered, and released back into the area by the city. He has a clipped ear to show he’d already been caught. The other cats are neutered and chipped.
