Today is All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows' Day, the Feast of All Saints,[3][4] or Solemnity of All Saints, is a Christian solemnity celebrated in honour of all the saints of the church, whether they are known or unknown.

It’s also the first day of Día de Muertos (Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead,) which is a holiday celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. It originated and is mostly observed in Mexico but also in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. Although associated with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.

We didn’t observe either as we had been Catholics in name only, and likely crypto-Jews until my mom converted to Protestantism which wasn’t something I inherited. There was possibly too much of a cultural and ethnic mix in my family to make us much of any particular thing.
