Attempting to “manage” an endless conflict is like managing a preschool of pyromaniacs. There will be fire. The only question is when.
In his Letter from Birmingham Jail, MLK wrote: " I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate [...] who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."
Last week was just another reminder of how dangerous it is to wait for “the right time” to end occupation. There are those who are happy to end the occupation in theory - just not now. Instead they’re more invested in making sure right-wing folks feel comfortable showing up to protest for “democracy.”
There won’t be justice for Israelis without Justice for Palestinians - a truth Israeli moderates need to understand. There is no democracy with occupation, and ignoring the occupation has dire consequences. We must remember this, especially now, as Ben-Gvir and the new ultranationalist government play with fire.
At every protest, moderate Israelis demand we ignore justice for Palestinians. They think this conflict we ‘manage’ is so perfect, so controlled, that it can wait – until it explodes in all our faces.
