Ruth and her mother, Cecilie Seidlerová Gutmannová, lived in Pilsen before being deported to the Theresienstadt (Terezin) ghetto; there, Ruth's mother died in 1942, and she was forced to live two years without her before eventually being deported to Auschwitz and murdered. Her father was also sent to Auschwitz and died there in 1944.
