The police officials repeatedly asked the boys to confess to the chain-snatching and confiscated their mobile phones. To the untrained eye and ear, #Kerala is a beautiful paradise with socialist schemes and a commitment to #equality and the upliftment of the downtrodden. But sadly, those who are ‘different’ in Kerala stick out like sore thumbs and can be ridiculed or shamed. Those with distinctive self-expression are subjected to stares and comments in public – they are too ‘Western’, too ‘mod’, too ‘forward’ – and often experience #violence.
