#Kerala has recently unveiled the largest #bird #statue in the #world,

#Jatayu the #Vulture from #Ramayana:
After completion, it became accessible to visitors on 17 August 2018.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatayu_Earth%27s_Center_Nature_Park
The statue is a representation of a legend, and symbolizes the protection of women, and their honour and safety.

Ravana was attempting to abduct Sita to Lanka when Jatayu tried to rescue her. Jatayu fought valiantly with Ravana, but as Jatayu was very old Ravana soon defeated him, clipping his wings, and Jatayu fell onto the rocks in Chadayamangalam. Rama and Lakshmana while on the search for Sita, chanced upon the stricken and dying Jatayu, who informed them of the battle with Ravana and told them that Ravana had headed South.

Indian Elephant in Discussion

Kerala: India temple replaces elephant with robot for rituals.
enter image description here

It became history when a mechanical elephant was dedicated to the deity in Kallettumkara Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple to perform rituals.

However, elephant organizations have objected to the use of such robotic elephants for festivals. These organizations (aana premi sangam) have warned that if percussion artists participate in festivals with robotic elephants, they will not be able to perform in other festivals where artists are determined by them.
The Manakkodi Aanapremi Sangam points out that if mechanical elephants are used, the elephants themselves will disappear from festival celebrations, along with rituals, and the elephant workers will become jobless.

What do you think as an environmentalist about this issue ?

#India - The anatomy of a #torture complaint

source: https://www.himalmag.com/the-anatomy-of-a-torture-complaint-2020/

At the #police station, they were interrogated and then tortured – they were verbally abused and beaten, and Vinayakan’s hair was pulled. The police officials repeatedly asked the boys to confess to the chain-snatching and confiscated their mobile phones. Then they shamed Vinayakan for his hairstyle, his earrings and his friendship with the girl he was speaking to.

...

To the untrained eye and ear, #Kerala is a beautiful paradise with socialist schemes and a commitment to #equality and the upliftment of the downtrodden. But sadly, those who are ‘different’ in Kerala stick out like sore thumbs and can be ridiculed or shamed. Those with distinctive self-expression are subjected to stares and comments in public – they are too ‘Western’, too ‘mod’, too ‘forward’ – and often experience #violence.
